Agriculture Advocacy–Why is it Important?
If someone were to ask me what one of the most important things I was taught growing up, I would answer with two words: agriculture advocacy.
I come from a long, long line of farmers and ranchers whose whole lives were dedicated solely to agriculture and developed that very same passion and excitement for agriculture at a young age. My parents always instilled the importance of agriculture in me and in how important it was to the survival of the world. I knew in my youth that agriculture was as much a part of me as I was of it.
Everyone within the industry has a voice. It’s important that we use our voices to engage with our communities and to promote education about what agriculture is and what it provides. Today, less than 2% of Americans are farmers and ranchers, so as less and less people are directly involved in agriculture, it is fundamental for people outside of the industry to understand what we do and the challenges we face.
The Importance of Agriculture Advocacy
Agricultural advocacy plays a crucial role in ensuring the sustainability and success of the agricultural industry. Now, more than ever, it is essential to advocate for agriculture and to promote a deeper understanding of the vital role farmers and ranchers play in our world. So, why is agricultural advocacy so important in today's world?

By advocating for agricultural policies and practices that support farmers and ranchers, we can ensure a steady supply of nutritious and safe food for our communities. What does Agriculture Advocacy Look Like?
Agriculture advocacy takes on different forms and can be done in many different ways. Sometimes, its as simple as a farmer posting a photo to social media of their cattle during calving season or of one of the crops they’re growing and explaining what happens next. It’s eye-opening to see what agriculture looks like through the eyes of those directly involved in it.
Blogs like this are a form of agricultural advocacy. Writing about farm and ranch life, as well as what goes on in the many areas of agriculture, is a way to spread the message about how agriculture sustains the world.
Teachers can bring agriculture to life in the classroom through field trips, educational resources, and Ag Days. They can help students understand that farming and ranching is a way of life.
Parents can teach their children about where our food comes from and how it’s grown. With social media, you can show your kids videos about farming and ranching to give them insight into a part of life they may not grow up around.
Of course, joining an association like the Madison County CattleWomen is a way to show your support of agriculture. Our mission is to promote the beef industry to impact generations. We want to connect our local farmers and ranchers to their communities and promote education between them and consumers.
There are so many ways one can promote and advocate for the agriculture industry. It’s not limited to one thing or one method. In fact, the differences in how we advocate are what brings us together and makes us stronger.
It’s important to remember that advocating for agriculture brings attention to the issues faced by those in the agricultural industry, but also all of the great successes. Add your voice in advocating for agriculture. However you say it or however you do it, let others know how important agriculture is to all of us.
