WATER!
As I write this I’m listening to the sound of RAIN! What a blessing it is to get rain, any amount of rain. You are probably starting to see the wheel lines and pivots starting to sprinkle water on the hay fields around the county but rain, it is always a good thing! Cows need grass and grass needs rain. I grew up in the prairies where water was fairly scarce so I find it really neat around here to have access to quite a bit of water for irrigating. Water rights can be tricky to understand and are extremely important in order to get multiple cuttings of hay throughout the summer. Hay means you can feed your cows in the winter! So, if you are dipping a pump into a ditch to water your lawn and a rancher asks you to take it out, please check out the DNRC.MT.Gov website to understand what they are talking about!
The weather is warming up, storms are showing up and its starting to feel closer to summer. Fields are getting planted, calves are getting branded, fencing is an ongoing adventure and ranchers are starting to think about kicking pairs out to summer pasture!
The Madison County Cattlewomen have an Ag Fair planned for June 3rd . Please visit our facebook page or look for a poster around town. Watch for future events, too!
